How To Save Energy When Using An Air Conditioner
The use of air conditioners has become more prevalent over the last decade. New houses are having air conditioners installed as standard, and many people are having air conditioners installed to beat the heat. The advent of the reverse cycle air conditioner has also made the decision to get air conditioning easier, as you can get the double benefit of cooling and heating for a modest price.
However, air conditioners draw a lot of power to perform effectively. As power costs increase, many people are asking the question, how can we run our air conditioners more efficiently and save money?
There are a number of things you can do to save energy when using your air conditioner. One of the easiest ways to reduce the energy it takes to run your air conditioner is to set it to cool at a level that is not too high. The recommended temperature is between 24 degrees and 26 degrees Celsius when cooling and between 18 to 24 degrees when heating. That provides you with a comfortable environment and does not over tax the air conditioner, saving energy and reducing running costs.
It is advisable to install the air conditioner on the shady size of the building. If you have a spilt system, install the motor on the shady side of the building, or worst case scenario, provide shade for the motor. This will keep it cool, reducing running costs.
When using air conditioning, keep doors closed and curtain drawn if possible. Windows allow the easy transfer of temperature from outside to inside, so having curtains closed provides a barrier, and keeps the heat out when you are trying to cool the room. The reverse is true when you are trying to heat the room. Preventing the transfer of heat through the window is critical to reduce energy use and save costs. However, if you use evaporative air conditioning, you need some airflow, so check if you have a refrigerative or evaporative type of airconditioning.
An even more effective way to save energy when cooling is to have outdoor blinds over your windows, to prevent the glass from getting hot in the first place.
When setting the louvers of the air conditioner when cooling, set them to send cool air upwards. The reason for this is that hot air rises. The reverse is true when heating a room.
Make sure that you maintain your air conditioner regularly for optimal performance. For example, it is important to clean the filter regularly, so that the motor is not required to force air through a clogged filter, wasting energy.
Finally, make sure that the air conditioner is the right size for the area you are cooling or heating. If the air conditioner is too small, the motor will be overworked and energy will be wasted, not to mention that the motor will burn out early. If the air conditioner is too big for the area, if you don't have an inverter, you will waste energy to cool the area and pay too much.
These are a few tips to help you save energy when using your air conditioner, and save money on running costs.
