The Seventeen Arch Bridge – Summer Palace’s Historical and Artistically Adorned Bridge
Resembling that of a rainbow curving majestically through the sky, the Seventeen Arch Bridge is a beautiful sight in Beijing. Crowds of tourists come to this bridge in the Summer Palace to view the spectacular scenery that it showcases. The bridge connects the eastern shore of the Kunming Lake in the east to the Nanhu Island in the west.
Truly a historical architectural piece, it was constructed during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the 1700’s. Spanning a length of 150 meters and a width of 8 meters, it is the longest bridge in the Summer Palace. The bridge combines different architectural styles such as that of Lugou Bridge in Beijing and the Baodai Bridge in Suzhou.
As the name signifies, this artistically built bridge comprises of 17 arches, of which the middle one is the largest. You will be enthralled by the beast like figures that stand on either end of the bridge, whilst there are 544 intricately carved marble lions that run across the parapet. These lions are each unique with its own features and postures, and is a great background for a few photographs.
Another unique feature that dominates one end of the bridge is an almost life size figurine of an ox that lies in a position with its head facing the lake. It is supposed to contain an engraving believed to be from Emperor Qianlong stating that the reason for the existence of the ox is for controlling flooding of the lake.
