Southern Pacific Railroads AC12 class of cab forward steam locomotives was the last class of steam locomotives ordered by Southern Pacific. They were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works during World War II, with the first, number 4275, entering service on October 27, 1943, and the last, 4294, on March 19, 1944. SP used the AC12s for a little over a decade with the first retirements occurring on April 5, 1955, and the last on September 24, 1958. All but one of this class, number 4294, was scrapped. Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) 2479 is one of six heavy 462 Pacific type steam locomotives built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923, designated the P10 class. 2479 was retired from service in 1956 and is currently undergoing restoration to operating condition; it is one of three surviving Southern Pacific 462 steam locomotives. The six locomotives in 2479s class were designed to pull such trains as the Overland Limited between Sparks, Nevada, and Ogden, Utah, a total 568 miles, without changing engines.
