Acne and Food - How What You Eat Affects Your Skin
There has been a lot of research performed around acne - what causes it, who gets it, and why. Acne is formed when pores close, and the natural oil that the body produces (sebum) from the sebaceous glands gets trapped inside along with bacteria. There are several factors involved in the formation of acne. Hormones and bacteria play a role, as well as genetics. The correlation between acne and food is based upon the fact that certain foods disrupt normal hormonal balance by causing spikes in insulin levels. It is this hormonal imbalance that is considered to be a key factor in the deep underlying cause in the formation of acne.
While there are many products on the market that will attempt to heal or cover up acne on the surface level, it is imperative for those suffering from acne to explore what is going on inside the body, in order to get the skin healthy and clear on the outside. After all, once acne surfaces it can result in various types of scarring - icepick scars, boxcar scars, or even keloids, which are the most difficult scars to treat.
The skin is the largest organ of the body. As such, when the liver and kidneys become overloaded and can no longer expel the toxins in our system appropriately, the body uses the skin to rid itself of the toxins, and the result is acne. Our diet is full of refined, processed, high fat foods that have poor nutrient quality. These foods throw our hormonal balance into a tailspin and are harmful to our digestive system by clogging it up creating toxic buildup. This buildup results in toxins being eliminated through the skin. In addition, these foods do not supply us with the essential vitamins and minerals our bodies need to fight off disease, and to stay well balanced - all of which creates a prime environment for acne to breed.
To truly permanently cure acne, one must re-examine their diet and lifestyle. Acne and food go hand in hand. The effects of a diet void of the essential nutrients that the body and mind need to remain healthy are far reaching. Replacing low quality foods with nutrient dense, plant based foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and drastically reducing, if not completely eliminating, animal products is a great start. Couple this with proper rest, moderate exercise, a good skin cleansing regimen, and supplements that aid in skin repair and maintaining overall health and you will be well on your way to living acne free.
