DRGW 463 is a 3 foot narrow gauge, Mikado type, 282 steam railway locomotive built for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903. They eventually became known by the nickname Mudhens. It is one of two remaining locomotives of DRGW class K27. Fifteen locomotives were built, originally class 125, then reclassified K27 in 1924 when the Denver and Rio Grande became the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The K27s were built as Vauclain compounds, with two cylinders on each side, expanding the steam once in the smaller cylinder and then a second time in the larger one. It was built as a passenger locomotive, with 46 in drivers, the second largest drivers used on any three foot gauge DRGW locomotive. They were originally built by Baldwin as part of an order for thirty standard gauge 280, Consolidation type, locomotives, class 190, in 1902. They were renumbered into class C41 during the railroads reorganization in 1924 and were converted to three foot gauge in 192830 at the railroads Burnham Shops with many new parts including new frames and smaller drivers. They were then renumbered into class K37. The locos worked out of Salida, Colorado to Gunnison, Colorado and up the Crested Butte Branch as well as the Monarch Branch. Number 485 fell into the turntable pit at Salida and was scrapped in Pueblo in 1955, with many parts being saved.
