World Cup Golden Boot
To win the Golden boot award at a World Cup is one of the greatest achievements any striker can have. The award has previously been won by many of the world's greatest ever players and in 2010 a new breed of stars will battle for the award.
It's usually the case that the winner of the award plays for one of the top teams, which gives Spain's strike force of Fernando Torres and David Villa a great chance in 2010. Fans of Argentina will be hoping that Messi can do what Maradona did in 1986 and lead his nation to glory. Messi will be supported by Real Madrid's striker Gonzalo Higuain, Manchester City's Carlos Tevez and Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero, all of whom are exciting, flamboyant players. Brazil go to the World Cup with much of their goal scoring hope pinned on Sevilla striker, Luis Fabiano. Fabiano was their leading scorer in qualification and with players such as Kaka providing support he should get plenty of chances.
Lionel Messi's main rival for the title of greatest player in the world is Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal had a difficult qualifying campaign for the World Cup and only qualified via a playoff. However, Ronaldo has been the world's most potent goal scorer over the last few years and goes into the tournament on the back of a fine first season in Spain.
The main outsiders for the Golden Boot would be Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Bayern's Miroslav Klose. Drogba has been in lethal form over the last few seasons for Chelsea and will hope to make up for a poor showing in the African Cup of Nations. Klose always seems to score goals in tournaments and is the current holder of the Golden Boot award.
