So you can imagine that putting the two of them together makes for a gift that no child could resist. And Lionel has done it with the Lionel Polar Express Train Set.

Trains around the Christmas tree have been a staple part of the holidays for years. Amazingly enough, it is one tradition that has not changed with time. They may not look the same as the plain black locomotive that was once pretty standard. But the delight that children feel when watching their train loop around the base of the tree is still the same.

Another tradition is the now classic story for children, The Polar Express. This book has become a favorite that every child wants to hear again and again, especially around Christmas time. There is even a radio station in California that has a different well-known personality read the book over the airwaves every year. The story has only gained in popularity with the release of the movie in 2004.

This year, Lionel has come out with the Polar Express train set, and has done a masterful job at the design. It boasts a die-cast metal engine, crafted like the one in the book and movie, plus three cars and a coal tender. The overall craftsmanship is such that it will make a person nostalgic for past eras. It is sure to appeal to adults as well as to children.

The attention to detail is also outstanding. Silhouettes are visible in the car windows. There are interior lights in the cars that work as well as a working headlight. The whistle sounds extremely realistic. And, perhaps the most charming feature is the smoke fluid that can be added so the engine can puff out real smoke as it trundles along. Also included are figures based on characters from the movie version of the book.

The train set is easy to put together. You will want to bear in mind that it needs to charge first before it can run. It is easy to use by children eight and older, for whom it is especially made. The transformer features a control that is easy for kids to operate. Younger children will also enjoy playing with the train but will likely require some help from an adult.
