The railroad modeling is the hobby that came about like a secret society. It is at a worldwide scale and the love for trains has never abated, going beyond the borders of race and culture. It slowly rose to heights where people all over congregate and are happy to discuss and share ideas on model trains. For newbies in the hobby, there are a few things you should know in basic railroading. One of the essentials is the model train scale.
The train scale refers to the size of the model train. It is usually scaled down to the size of the original train. An example would be given the aspect ratio of 1:160; this means the model train is 160 times smaller than the real live train. There are several train scales in this hobby. These are:
- G scale- Also known as the "garden" scale, trains under this category have a ratio of 1:22.5. These are model trains meant for the outdoors or the backyard.
- O scale- One of the most popular among the available scales. These trains have a ratio of 1:48.
- S scale- Goes well with standard and narrow gauge; the trains under this scale have a ratio of 1:64.
- HO scale- The other most popular scale to use among hobbyists, it has a ratio of 1:87. HO means "half of O scale" since the models is nearly half the size of the O scale trains. It runs on most 50mm gauge.
- British TT scale- This scale was invented by Hal Joyce. With a ratio of 1:100, this became one of United Kingdom's favorite scales to use. They run on 12mm gauge.
- TT scale- Termed as the "Table Top" scale, with a ratio of (1:120), these trains were marketed to be used specifically on tables. It also runs on 12mm gauge.
- N scale- Highly liked by most hobbyists until the British TT scale and the TT scale came out. It remains to be in demand with a ratio of 1:160.
- Z scale- For those who like mini-sized models for display or for easy carry around, this is the scale for you. The aspect ratio for this category is 1:220.
- T gauge- This is the latest scale to arrive, bumping the Z scale by half its size. With a ratio of 1:440, these are the micro-mini trains for the serious collector or train model fan.
What you need to consider in choosing the right model train scale for yourself is the space it will take. If you plan to showcase your railroad in the living room, maybe the Ho scale or TT scale would be a good choice. Should you opt to bring them outside, the most obvious scale to use is the G scale. It all depends on where you will place your train sets and how much your budget is. This hobby is not as expensive as it may seem, still, you should take into consideration that the trains you will acquire are of excellent quality and in superb condition. Choose wisely and put n your engineer's cap to start a journey in the world of model trains!
