7 Mile Bridge
If you are travelling to the lower Florida Keys, perhaps on your way to enjoy the many pleasures of Key West, you are going to encounter on of the longest bridges in the world.
This is the 7 mile bridge which spans a boating channel connecting the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Straights between the town of Marathon at mile marker 47 and Little Duck Keys. It also marks the transition from the "Middle Keys" to the "Lower Keys".
This bridge replaces an original railroad bridge that was originally completed in 1912 by Henry Flagler's project to link Key West to the mainland via his Florida East Coast Railway. The railway bridge was badly damaged in the Labor Day Hurricane in 1936 and was then rebuilt by the Federal Government as a bridge for automobile traffic.
By the 1970s it was apparent that the original bridge was at the end of its useful life and needed to be replaced. Work on the current bridge began in 1978 and was completed in 1982. It is somewhat shorter than the original and quite a bit wider to accommodate the increase in vehicle size over 40 years.
Much of the original bridge remains and is utilized as fishing piers and also provides access to Pigeon Key, the island just south of Marathon. It also provides a very good spot to watch the fantastic sunsets the Keys are justly famous for.
On your trip down to Key West, take some time and stop when you come to the seven mile bridge. Get out of the car and experience the sun, the colors of the ocean and, if you're lucky, the dolphins too!
Both the new, and the old, bridges provide visitors with experiences that are unique to the Florida Keys.
