Rio Grande Valley is Texas' Retirement Destination
I was talking to a colleague about his retired father. I thought Florida or Arizona would come up as the retirement destination. It is to my surprise that he retired to the Rio Grande Valley region in Texas. The Valley, as it is affectionately called by locals, is the area close to the Mexican border south of San Antonio. It includes cities like McAllen, Mission, Edinburg, Harlingen, and Brownsville.
Thinking about his father decision made me realize the attraction the valley has for the golden generation. It is in a warm but less humid part of state. It sees sunshine most of the year and winter is short-lived. This provides a lot of outdoor activities. The area is close to the mountains of Big Bend and also to the nice beaches of South Padre Island.
The area is peppered with small to medium cities. This environment provides a low cost of living for our seniors where real estate is affordable. Average home prices for the area are in the 100s. This number is increasing as the area gets more developed due to increased Mexican trade. There are plenty of retirement communities available, homes for sale, or plots of land to build.
Although the area is sparse, major cities like Brownsville and McAllen are growing. These communities have great hospitals, airports and all of the other comforts of any American town. The Rio Grande Valley is also close to major metropolitan cities like San Antonio and Corpus Christi.
The Valley is a lesser know retirement location that has a lot to offer. It has the top things retirees are looking for which are affordability, warm weather, and access to services.
