Ge [Nyse:ge] Aids The World's First Use Of Full Scale Sugarcane Ethanol
Sugarcane ethanol‘s advantages include being cheaper because of the fact that it doesn't need to be converted from carbohydrates to sugar, which is fermented to make ethanol. Other advantages include being easier and cheaper to produce than corn ethanol because corn requires enzymes which complicates the process; being more predictable than corn ethanol because sugar crop is more stable than corn belt and corn is subject to pests, floods, high winds and droughts; having seven times more harvests than corn; being more consistent than corn which may not produce as much as expected; and having more energy output as compared to its energy input.
G.E. will be helping in the sugarcane ethanol generation of energy. According to G.E.'s website, their wind turbines avoid as much as 18.3 million tons of greenhouse gases annually, which is equivalent to over three million cars off the road.
Meanwhile G.E.'s partner for the project Petrobras who produces cooking gas, gasoline, kerosene, asphalt and paraffin, just opened its ethanol fuel business to compete against ethanol products in North America.
The Juiz de Fora power station is an 87-megawatt natural gas plant located at Rio de Janeiro which features two GE gas turbines. GE has altered the combustor of one turbine to turn it into a dual-fuel system and enable ethanol use.
The advantage of having a GE dual-fuel system is that it can provide electricity dependability and security because it gives more choices to the source of fuel.
Emissions will be regularly checked. After 5 months of illustration, the use of ethanol as a substitute fuel for gas turbine will be formalized.
Brazil has been producing ethanol for 35 years. In 2008, Brazil had generated 26.9 billion liters of ethanol.
