Model Train Tracks
If you're going to begin setting up a model trainset, you need to learn more about not only the trains themselves but also the tracks. Okay, you might think, many of these kits come with tracks to begin with, so no problem. But what if part of your track becomes damaged or needs replacement - or you get tired of your old track configuration and want to come up with something newer and more interesting? That's why you need to learn all about train tracks. It's knowledge that will come in handy sooner or later.
One of the first things you need to learn about is the gauge. Each and every scale of model train used comes with a corresponding gauge, so that's one less thing you have to worry about. It's just something that becomes a concern if and when you have to add new extensions to your track or swap some out for newer ones. Thanks to the efforts done by the National Model Railroading Association or NMRA to standardize both scales and gauges worldwide, you simply have to use the letters of the scale when you want to buy new track to match your train. If you have a Z scale train, therefore, you need to buy Z gauge track, and the same goes for O scale trains and trains of every other scale available as well. You can be confident that wherever you are in the world, your model train scales and its track gauges will be exactly the same.
The next step is deciding where to place your train. This can depend very greatly on two things: the size of the train and trackset, and how large your indoor area is, such as a living room or something of the sort. O scale model trains, the largest possible model trains, require large amounts of space and thus may not be suitable for installation inside a house. Conversely, Z scale trains are the smallest possible and may be an excellent fit even for a small house. And of course the expanse and shape of the track that you want to put in place is also a major factor. If you are happy with just a simple loop then indoors might be alright; if not, and you want something considerably more complex such as a figure-eight, dogbone track, or anything of the sort, consider outdoor installation. (And if your setup has quite a few curves, you should also consider what are called easements, which help ease your train in and out of curves and prevent derailment.)
Lastly, you may have to consider what sort of tracks to purchase. A Flexitrack is a realistic-looking track that allows for curves and angles that look real. Or, if you are an advance model railroad hobbyist and you really want the most authentic feel, you could lay the track yourself - but of course this is not an option open to beginners or even most intermediate hobbyists. The quickest and easiest - and perhaps cheapest - option is to use a simple track whose pieces just snap together.
