How To Make Informed Bets On The Super Bowl
Super Bowl XLIV will be played on February 7, 2010 at Dolphins Stadium in Miami, Florida. And do you know what goes with the Super Bowl? Super Bowl betting! If you are an avid football fan, you have probably followed the games all season and probably already know all about the season’s favorites. If you are not, though, and you are just watching the Super Bowl for the spectacle and to do a little harmless betting, you will need a crash course in point spread betting. The first thing to realize is that to make informed bets and increase your chances of winning, you need to know more than just the odds – you’re going to have to delve a little deeper.
First of all, you need to decide what kind of bet you are going to place. When it comes to the Super Bowl, people place a lot of incredibly silly bets that are purely based on luck. Whether it is which team will get the first field goal or who will commit the first penalty, people tend to go overboard. It is all in good fun, so why not? However, if you are interested in placing a bet that has an element of analysis and skill involved, the most popular is a point spread bet.
Point spread betting works quite a bit differently from the fixed odds betting that most people have in mind when they bet. Point spread betting is based on the concept of a spread. A spread is a range of outcomes for the event that you are betting on, and the bet you place will be based on the spread of the event. Let’s take a plain English example. You might hear that Team A is “giving” four points to Team B. This means that Team A needs to win by at least four points to “beat the spread.” If they do, whoever bet on them takes home the money; if they don’t, whoever bet on the underdog wins the money, regardless of who actually wins the game. That’s point spread betting in a nutshell.
Now that you know a little bit about point spread betting, you can see for yourself that the winning bet might have little to do with the actual winner of the Super Bowl and more to do with the point spread offered by gambling houses on betting odds for or against a team. For one, the odds-making experts even things out for both the teams, while making odds to give the betting house more of an advantage. This evening out of the odds makes spread betting a little more interesting.
So how do you make the best possible bet if you are not a football expert? Here are a few things to keep an eye on:
- Injuries: The nightmare of any Super Bowl team. Pay close attention before the Super Bowl to find out if any of the star players on either team are injured. If a player is injured, are they expected to play or not? If they are, it is only natural that they may be less effective than usual. If not, their backup is likely to be rusty from lack of play and nervous to be playing in the Super Bowl – not a good combination.
- Match-ups: Football is a game of match-ups – each player pitted against his opposite number. The trick is determining whom each match-up favors. For example, does the defense have an excellent cornerback who is expected to render the offense’s star wide receiver ineffective? Does the offensive team have a center or a guard who is expected to open holes in the defensive line for his team’s running backs? If you need a little expert analysis to help you, you will find plenty on the various sports channels as well as online.
- Offense Versus Defense: The prevailing wisdom is that a good defense is mathematically more likely to beat a good offense. With that in mind, compare the teams’ offensive and defensive stats. How do they stack up? Is there no appreciable difference between offenses but a big gap in their defensive ratings? Alternatively, are their defenses fairly evenly matched and the game will be left to the offense to see who can break away first and last.
- Prior History: Every team in the NFL has history with each other. If the two playing in the Super Bowl have met relatively recently with the same or similar lineups, it can be instructive to study that game and see how each team played.
Remember, knowledge is power. Don’t ever wager hastily. The Indianapolis Colts are a favorite this year with the widest point spread backing. So get your Super Bowl XLIV football bet in for the event of the year, and root for your team to take home the Lombardi Trophy!

Pages: 36. Chapters: Super Bowl XXX, Super Bowl V, Super Bowl XXVII, Super Bowl XII, Super Bowl XXVIII, Super Bowl VI, Super Bowl XIII, 1967 NFL Championship Game, The Catch, 1966 NFL Championship Game, The Block. Excerpt: Super Bowl XXVII was a football game played on January 31, 1993 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion following the 1992 regular season. The National Football Conference (NFC) champion Dallas Cowboys (16-3) defeated the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Buffalo Bills (14-6), 52-17 (a then-record 69 combined points). The Cowboys won their third Super Bowl in team history, and their first one in fifteen years. The Bills became the first team to lose three consecutive Super Bowls, and just the second team to play in three straight (the Miami Dolphins played in Super Bowls VI-VIII, winning VII and VIII). This is also the first time that three teams from the same division have each won a Super Bowl within one year of each other (The Cowboys NFC East rivals, the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins won the previous two Super Bowls XXV and XXVI respectively.) The Bills' Super Bowl record nine turnovers-four interceptions and five lost fumbles-led to their third consecutive Super Bowl loss. The Cowboys lost two fumbles themselves, tying the Super Bowl record for the most turnovers by both teams (the Cowboys and the Baltimore Colts also committed a combined 11 turnovers in Super Bowl V). Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman was named Super Bowl MVP, completing 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 28 yards. This was the seventh and last Super Bowl to date that the Greater Los Angeles Area has hosted. Super Bowl XXVII was originally scheduled to be played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, the home of the Phoenix Cardin... |
