Model Railroading - Scenery
Model railroad scenery provides the landscape and background accessories necessary to develop the theme of any train display. The scenery shows what geographical area the train moves through, whether the train is used for passenger travel or cargo transport, what season it is or even what time of day it is. This part of the display construction can be very tedious and time consuming depending on how detailed you want to make your display.
Building to Scale
Think about the prototype after which you are modeling: How many miles, states or countries does it cover? It is important to consider scale prior to building the model railroad scenery - that way everything is in proportion. All train models are based on various scales, so depending on what scale train you have will help to determine what scale to use when you create the scenery.
A Created Landscape
The first part of model railroad scenery is the geography: the combination of sky, mountains, rivers, trees and foliage that reveal the landscape of the location. You can build this part of the scenery using various materials - some that you purchase and even some that you may already have in your house. You can create sky by lining up and painting sheets of hardboard, a flexible wood that you can use in straight paths and in corners. Mountainous areas can be made using balled-up newspaper, chicken wire and plaster. You may also want to use broken ceiling tile for loose or layered rocks. Another method is to purchase foam spray that expands and is pliable once dried. Once you have assembled all the terrain, you can apply various colors using acrylic paints.
For accessorizing features, you may purchase pre-made trees, foliage and grass and glue into place. Ground cover may consist of fine soil, rocks and sand.
Buildings, People and Accessories
If your train moves throughout a city, between two cities or even across a landscape, consider the buildings and people that it may pass by. These are all part of the model railroad scenery. Hobby suppliers make this part of the scenery easy for you because buildings, people and accessories can be purchased. These accessories typically come as a kit full of instructions and all of the plastic parts that make up a building.
Additionally, you can use a flat water-based acrylic weathering medium in order to create "aging" on the buildings. By applying washes of weathering medium, you can enhance your display's realism, as no building will sparkle and shine regardless of where it is located. You can create oil stains, soot and rust using various colors.
Perspective
If you plan to construct a display that fully utilizes foreground and background, you may consider arranging larger buildings, trees and accessories near the front of your display. Then, as the display moves into the background, you may progressively integrate smaller features. This method is called forcing perspective.
About the Author
Johan became fascinated with trains when he was a toddler. "My mom took my brother and me on Stone Mountain's Scenic Railroad. In those days they still operated a steam locomotive. I loved that old fashioned smokestack!" Blushing, Johan added, "And I was devastated when I learned my engineer dad didn't operate trains."
