All About the Run Flat Tires
Run flat tires are the pneumatic vehicle tires. This tire is specifically crafted to resist the consequences of deflation when it gets punctured. This tire enables the vehicle to keep on moving at the reduced speed of 55 miles per hour and only for a limited distance up to maximum 200 miles. Such performance depends on the type of the run flat tire.
Currently the run flat tire is available in three essential technologies. The tree variations are auxiliary-supported, self-sealing, and self-supporting.
In an auxiliary-supported run flat tire, an additional supportive ring is fixed to the wheel. In case of a sudden loss of pressure, this additional ring supports the weight of the automobile. Such system usually offers much better riding quality due to the stiffness of its sidewall is equivalent to that of a standard tire. However, the requirement of having both the special wheels as well as the special tires increases the cost of maintenance, at the same time limiting the systems from extensive use.
The self-sealing run flat tires contain another extra lining inside the tire. In case of small holes created by a screw or a nail, the lining self-seals itself to avoid deflation. In the process, the loss of air can be stopped from the very beginning because such tire is permanently self-repairing. There are different types of retro-fitted sealants that work like the self-sealing tires. This compound is generally injected through the tire valves. Subsequently the rotating force distributes the element in the inner side of the tire and acts as the self-sealing coating in the tire.
The self-supporting run flat tire is commonly used in passenger cars and light trucks. These tires usually help the vehicle to move at the speed of fifty miles per hour for as far as fifty miles. However it is advisable to avoid such rigorous use because in the process the tires will get irreparably damaged. On the other hand if the run flat tire is punctured at the edges of the tread or in the sidewall, repairing it can be unsafe and normally impossible. Such tire on an average carries 15%-27% more weight and an additional 2.5- 3 kg over the standard tires.
Depending on its designs, several run flat wheels and tires work more efficiently, than the standard tires. The additional structural materials and mass help the run flat tire to boast of a 20% advanced rolling assistance. Reinforced side walls ensure firmer rides against the conventional tires. If you use a run flat tire, you do not have to bother about a spare wheel. The absence of the spare wheel ensures lesser vehicle weight that in turn reduces harmful emissions, fuel consumption and improves the performance of the vehicle.
