Custer's First Last Stand: Trevilian Station, Virginia
Almost everyone has heard of Custer's Last Stand at the Little Big Horn River in Montana. Here he and his men met their Maker with the help of the Sioux and other Native American Tribes.
Did you know, however, that George Armstrong Custer escaped a similar occurrence during the Civil War?
Take a ride on Virginia Route 33 going Southeast from Gordonsville, which is located Northeast of Charlottesville. You will be following a railroad track on your left. This was a major supply line to Gordonsville where a hospital for the Confederate soldiers was located. Before you arrive at Louise you will see a historical marker of the left side of the road. Stop there and be amazed. In bold letters the sign announces the site of Custer's First Last Stand. You are at a railroad crossing called Trevilian Station. You will not find it on a map, but the site and station were very important during the Civil War era.
Some accounts write him as a great hero, who saved the colors from being captured by Wade Hampton 's troops. This is the rest of the story of what happened that day. On June 11, 1864 Trevilian Station was the site of Custer's FIRST LAST STAND. Travilian Station was loaded with ammunition, caissons and hundreds of horses. Custer decided to be greedy and capture all of this booty. He did so in grand fashion, but found out that he was surrounded by not only Hampton's troops, but also by Fitzhugh Lee's Cavalry. He did not notice a Confederate horse artillery unit on a hill. The decimated his front line troops. His flanks were also under attack. General Philip Sheridan heard the gun firing and came to rescue Custer and his troops. The Union suffered more than1, 000 casualties, while the Confederacy loses were about 600. Custer was to repeat this event many years later at the Little Big Horn River. We know what happened there. Consistency is so nice.
