Ballet Exercises For Turnout - Understanding the Hip Joints
Ballet exercises done at the barre are all intended to improve strength for turnout. Most dance students want to INCREASE turnout, yet many do not understand the hip joints, or which muscles rotate the thighs to hold it well. Another factor in the success of you using your turnout is the correct posture of the pelvis. Tilting the pelvis either forward or back, compromises the surrounding muscles.
The result is either the small of the back is swayed and the rotator muscles are lax, or the low back is unnaturally straightened and the muscles around the hips are clenched, but the thighs are not rotated outward as far as they could be.
The rotator muscles are under the big muscles of the hip joint. When they are contracted, the thighs turn outward.
This outward rotation can be decreased if the inner thigh, the adductor muscles, are tight. So a good stretch to do to increase the rotation is to sit in second position on the floor and work on widening that position.
Always be very warmed up!
The way to test how much natural turnout you have is to lie on your stomach, legs straight. Bend one knee, then let the lower leg fall inwards, as far as it can. This is your turnout angle. Some hip sockets are angled more to the side than others. If yours are angled to the front, you will have less potential to turnout.
Before you have a good cry about it, watch your favorite ballet movies. You will notice that some stars in the dance world are very turned out and many are not. You cannot always see that under the costume, ballerinas may open their hip a lot more to get a turned out arabesque.
If you can hold your turnout at all times, you can dance safely. Good technique is not about being perfect - it is about working correctly to prevent dance injuries.
You can always improve technique with enough repetition and understanding. Without the right information however, you can waste time and bulk up muscles without getting stronger. Take a look at a special dancers' manual that will tell you how to INCREASE BALLET TURNOUT.
